It’s been a while since I posted, but it’s International Women’s Day, so here are six incredible punk bands to help celebrate.

Looking through my archives, I realize just how many photographs I shot of Samuel “Meuwl” Harshbarger, who we lost seven years ago today. Though there are plenty of images Sam already on this site, I always seem to find more I want to share — including the first image I ever took of him in 2006 (above) and the last in 2008 (bottom).

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich recently joined Men in Blazers to name his soccer team comprised of only musicians. I haven’t seen Lars’s list, but because he is a mediocre drummer who likes to sue music fans, I’m sure his lineup is about as interesting as any Metallica album after 1991. Instead, I’ve come up with my own team. Some are musicians who have in fact played. Some I only wish did.

Fleetwood is 6’6″ and as Fleetwood Mac’s drummer has quick hands and is used to sitting in the back while the glory happens in front of him.

I recently read Pitchfork’s 5-10-15-20 feature with Descendants frontman Milo Aukerman. As part of the 5-10-15-20 series, artists talk about the music that made an impact on them throughout their lives, five years at a time. I got to thinking about this for myself, and since Pitchfork will never ask me, I thought I’d share my own.
Pretty much all of my early exposure to music was from riding in the car with my father. That involved a constant rotation classic country such as Conway Twitty and George Jones or oldies like Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. Most of all, it was Elvis, his favorite singer.

This past weekend, my friend Zachary Hunt celebrated his marriage to his awesome partner Amelia. Unfortunately, I could not make it to Austin to celebrate with them. So instead I’ll share this image I took of Zach at the end of our very first Femme et vélo shoot in 2011. Whether it was shooting for Femme et vélo or a wedding, riding bikes or drinking cocktails in front of Dolce Vita, it’s been a lot of fun being friends with this handsome gentleman. Congratulations on your marriage, Zach and Amelia.

Prince changed my life. He is my favorite musician. Purple Rain is my favorite album. Today’s news of his death has left me without words, but I had to at least say that.
Thank you, you beautiful one.
While my Climate Ride adventure officially begins Sunday, early this morning we departed San Francisco for Fortuna where we begin our 327-mile trek tomorrow morning.
I snapped this image with my iPhone before we headed north. It was my first time to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. In six days I’ll be crossing it again on my bicycle.
Thank you again to all my family and friends who helped me raise more than $4,000 to support climate change awareness and to make cycling safer across the country.
Jay Adams passed away late yesterday. Adams and this photograph by Glen E. Friedman changed my life. In fact, it is tattooed on my right leg — that is how much it means to me. I’m gutted by the news of Jay’s passing. He lived a hard life troubled by family issues, drugs and crime, but he is one of the most important skateboarders of all time. I’m not a skateboarder, but it was Jay Adams and Glen E. Friedman’s photographs that inspired me to be punk rock, to be rebellious, to not trust authority, to live my life my way. Having moved to Los Angeles, I hoped I would run into Jay, meet him and thank him. He was an inspiration to me. Thanks, Jay. RIP.
For about a year from summer 2004 to 2005, I lived in central Florida while working for a small newspaper. It was an interesting experience before I opted to head to Texas for graduate school. One of the few highlights from my time in Florida was living near Gainesville and seeing a number of memorable shows. This image is of Richmond, Virginia’s finest punk band Avail at the Common Grounds. I stood on stage to shoot the performance, but I only took about a dozen frames as I sang along with every song instead. Avail is one of the best bands I’ve ever seen live and this show one of my favorites I’ve ever seen. In column on the right in you can stream their album “Over the James” in the Spotify widget I’ll be updating each week.
